The steps to becoming a licensed California Driver

Dear Parents and Teens,

Welcome to Davis Academy Driving School!

Learning to drive is an exciting milestone, and we understand it can also feel overwhelming. Since 1996, we have helped thousands of students become safe, confident, and responsible drivers. Our goal is to make the licensing process as simple as possible.

Step 1 – Complete Driver Education

Students under 18 years of age must complete a California DMV-approved Driver Education course before applying for a learner’s permit.

Our online Driver Education course is available on our website and can be completed at your own pace. After successfully completing the course, you will receive your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C).

Step 2 – Apply for a California Learner’s Permit

Once Driver Education is complete, schedule an appointment with the California DMV.

Bring the required identification documents and complete the DMV application. The DMV will require you to:

  • Verify your identity and residency (as required by the DMV)
  • Provide your Social Security Number (if applicable)
  • Pass a vision screening
  • Have your photo and thumbprint taken
  • Pay the DMV application fee
  • Pass the DMV knowledge (written) test

After passing the knowledge test, the DMV will issue your California Provisional Instruction Permit.

Important :

Your learner’s permit is NOT valid until you complete your first behind-the-wheel lesson with a DMV-licensed driving instructor who signs your permit.

Until your permit has been signed by a licensed instructor, you may not practice driving.

Students may never drive alone while holding a provisional permit. A qualified licensed adult or DMV-licensed driving instructor must always be in the vehicle.

Step 3 – Behind-the-Wheel Training

California law requires drivers under 18 to complete:

  • Six (6) hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction with a DMV-licensed driving school.
  • Fifty (50) hours of supervised practice with a licensed adult age 25 or older.
  • At least ten (10) of those practice hours must be completed at night.

We recommend:

  • Complete your first lesson soon after receiving your permit to activate it.
  • Practice approximately 25 hours before your second lesson.
  • Practice the remaining hours before your third lesson.
  • Schedule your final lesson within one to two weeks of your DMV driving test so everything is fresh in your mind.

Step 4 – Take the DMV Driving Test

Before taking your driving test, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold your California permit for at least six (6) months.
  • Complete all six hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • Complete the required 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night.

Once these requirements have been completed, schedule your DMV driving test.
